성 아카치오(Saint Acacius)는 로마제국의 군인으로 백인대장이었다. 그는 그리스도인이란 이유로 동료들과 함께 체포되어 호민관에게 심문과 고문을 받고 콘스탄티노플로 이송되었고, 그곳에서도 기둥에 묶여 채찍질과 심한 고문을 당했으나 끝까지 신앙을 지켰다.

Saint Acacius was a centurion soldier in the Roman Empire. He was arrested with his colleagues because he was a Christian, interrogated and tortured by a tribune, and then transported to Constantinople. There, he was tied to a pillar and subjected to scourging and severe torture, but he maintained his faith until the end. 

 

결국 그는 참수형을 받고 순교의 월계관을 썼고, 그의 시신은 관에 담겨 바다에 던져졌으나 가라앉지 않고 기적적으로 이탈리아 남부 칼라브리아(Calabria) 해안까지 떠밀려와 그곳에 모셔져 공경을 받았다.

In the end, he was beheaded and crowned with the laurel wreath of martyrdom. His body was placed in a coffin and thrown into the sea, but instead of sinking, it miraculously washed up on the coast of Calabria, southern Italy, where it was enshrined and revered. 

 

또한 후대에 기록된 전설적 이야기에 따르면 로마 군대의 백인대장이었던 그는 9천 명의 군사와 함께 열 배나 많은 반란군과 맞서 싸웠다.

Also, according to a later legendary story, he was a centurion in the Roman army and fought with 9,000 soldiers against rebels who were ten times more numerous. 

 

열세에 몰린 그와 군인들은 천사가 나타나 알려준 대로 그리스도에게 기도해 반란군을 모두 무찔렀다. 그 뒤에 그들은 하늘에서 내려주는 만나를 먹으며 신앙의 가르침을 받았다.

Outnumbered, he and the soldiers prayed to Christ as the angel told them and defeated all the rebels. Afterwards, they ate manna from heaven and received religious teachings. 

 

그들의 승전 소식을 들은 황제는 로마의 신들에게 희생제사를 바치라고 했으나 병사들이 이를 따르지 않았다.

After hearing the news of their victory, the emperor ordered them to offer sacrifices to the Roman gods, but the soldiers did not comply. 

 

결국 황제는 대규모의 이교도 군인들을 보내 강제로 개종을 요구했지만, 그리스도교로 개종한 병사들과 그는 혹독한 박해에도 불구하고 끝까지 신앙을 지키며 모두 장렬하게 순교하였다. 

In the end, the emperor sent a large number of pagan soldiers to forcibly demand conversion, but both the soldiers who converted to Christianity and he maintained their faith to the end despite the harsh persecution and were martyred heroically.
