빙겐의 성녀 베르타(Saint Bertha of Bingen)는 막대한 재산을 소유하고 있었다.

Saint Bertha of Bingen owned enormous wealth. 

 

베르타(Bertha)의 의미는 ‘밝은, 유명한’이라는 뜻이다.

The meaning of Bertha is ‘bright, famous’. 

 

그녀는 외교인과 결혼하여 아들을 두었고, 남편이 전투 중에 사망한 후 그녀의 아들를 신자로 개종시키기 위해 노력하였다.

She married a diplomat and had a son, and after her husband died in battle, she tried to convert her son to a believer. 

 

그녀는 가난한 사람들을 위한 구호소를 여러 곳에 세웠고, 로마(Roma)를 순례한 후에는 모든 재산을 포기하고 아들과 함께 은수자가 되었다.

She established several almshouses for the poor, and after a pilgrimage to Rome, she gave up all her possessions and became a hermit with her son. 

 

아들이 20살에 세상을 떠난 뒤 그녀는 25년을 더 살다가 선종하였다. 그들이 은수생활을 했던 언덕은 루페르츠베르크(Rupertsberg)로 불리게 되었다.

After her son passed away at the age of 20, she lived another 25 years before passing away. The hill where they lived as hermits came to be called Rupertsberg.
