성 시몬 스톡(Saint Simon Stock)은 1165년 영국에서 태어났다. 그의 초기 생애에 대해서는 거의 알려진 것이 없다.
Saint Simon Stock was born in England in 1165. Little is known about his early life.
스톡(Stock)의 의미는 ‘나무줄기’라는 뜻이다. 그의 이름과 관련된 전설적 이야기가 하나 전해져 온다. 그는 12살 때부터 속이 빈 참나무 안에 들어가 은수자로 살았다고 한다.
The meaning of stock is ‘tree trunk.’ There is a legendary story related to his name. It is said that he lived as a hermit inside a hollow oak tree from the age of 12.
이후 그는 카르멜회의 수도원장으로 활동하면서 카르멜회 수도자를 발굴하는 데 힘썼다.
Afterwards, he worked as a Carmelite abbot and worked hard to discover Carmelite monks.
또한 그는 1251년 7월 7월 16일 성모 마리아의 계시를 받았다고 전해지고 있다. 당시 기록에 따르면 카르멜회는 많은 어려움을 겪고 있었다.
It is also said that he received a revelation from the Virgin Mary on July 16, 1251. According to records at the time, the Carmelites were experiencing many difficulties.
그는 성모님의 도움을 간절히 기도했는데 1251년 7월 16일 아기 예수님을 안고 한 손에 갈색 스카풀라를 든 동정 마리아가 천사들과 함께 그의 앞에 나타나 다음과 같이 말했다고 한다.
He prayed earnestly for the Virgin Mary's help, and on July 16, 1251, the Virgin Mary, holding the baby Jesus and holding a brown scapular in one hand, appeared before him with angels and said the following.
“사랑하는 아들아, 너의 수도회를 위해 이 스카풀라를 받아라. 이는 내가 너와 카르멜산의 자녀들을 위해 얻은 특별한 은총의 징표이다. 이 스카풀라를 죽는 순간까지 착용하고 있는 사람은 누구나 지옥에 떨어지지 않는 특권을 누릴 것이며, 그가 죽은 후 첫 번째 토요일에 성모 마리아의 도움을 받아 천국에 이르리라. 이는 구원의 휘장이며, 위험으로부터 지켜 줄 방패이자 특별히 평화와 보호를 약속해 줄 것이다.”
“Dear son, receive this scapular for your order. This is a sign of the special grace I have obtained for you and the children of Mount Carmel. Anyone who wears this scapular until the moment of his death will enjoy the privilege of not falling into hell, and will reach heaven with the help of the Virgin Mary on the first Saturday after his death. This is the badge of salvation, the shield that will protect you from danger and especially the promise of peace and protection.”
그는 평생 금욕적 삶을 실천하며 거룩한 삶을 살았던 인물로 1265년 5월 16일 프랑스의 보르도(Bordeaux)에서 선종했다.
He lived a holy life, practicing asceticism throughout his life, and died in Bordeaux, France on May 16, 1265.
