성모마리아의 아버지 성 요아킴과 어머니 성 안나는 결혼한 지 오래되었으나 아이가 없었다.
The Virgin Mary's father, St. Joachim, and mother, St. Anna, had been married for a long time but had no children.
아버지 성 요아킴이 단식하며 광야에서 하느님께 기도하였고 어머니 성 안나 또한 주님 앞에서 울며 탄식 기도를 하였다.
His father, St. Joachim, fasted and prayed to God in the wilderness, and his mother, St. Anna, also wept and sighed before the Lord.
그들의 간절한 기도를 들으신 하느님은 천사를 보내시어 성녀 안나에게 나타나 그녀가 잉태하여 낳은 아이는 온세상에 이름을 떨칠 것이라고 알려주었고 이에 성 안나는 그 아이를 주님께 봉헌하겠다고 약속했다.
God, who heard their earnest prayer, sent an angel to appear to Saint Anna and inform her that the child she conceived and gave birth to would be famous throughout the world, and Saint Anna promised to consecrate the child to the Lord.
그 후 성모마리아는 아버지 성 요아킴과 어머니 성 안나 사이에서 태어나셨다.
After that, the Virgin Mary was born to St. Joachim, the father, and St. Anna, the mother.
성모마리아가 세 살이 되었을 때 성 요아킴과 성녀 안나는 하느님께 약속한 대로 성모마리아를 예루살렘 성전으로 데려가 그곳에서 양육되도록 맡겼다고 한다.
When the Virgin Mary was three years old, Saint Joachim and Saint Anna, as promised to God, took her to the Temple of Jerusalem and left her to be raised there.
성모마리아는 갈릴래아의 나자렛에 있는 자기 집에서 약혼자 성 요셉과의 혼인을 준비하며 지내던 중에 천사 가브리엘의 방문을 맞게 되었다.
가브리엘은 성모마리아를 “은총이 가득한 이”라고 부르며 인사한 다음 성모마리아가 성령을 통하여 메시아로 약속받은 한 사내아이를 잉태하여 그의 어머니가 될 것이라고 알려 주었다.
Gabriel greeted the Virgin Mary, calling her “full of grace,” and informed her that the Virgin Mary would conceive a male child who was promised as the Messiah through the Holy Spirit and would become his mother.
이에 성모마리아는 “저는 주님의 종입니다. 말씀하신 대로 저에게 이루어지기를 바랍니다.”라고 말하며 순전히 자유의지로 하느님의 뜻에 전적으로 순종하겠다고 대답하였다.
In response, the Virgin Mary said, “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me as you have said,” and replied that she would obey the will of God completely out of sheer free will.
몇달 후 성 요셉이 성모마리아의 임신 사실을 알고 남몰래 그녀와 파혼하기로 작정하였다.
A few months later Saint Joseph learned of the Virgin Mary's pregnancy and secretly decided to divorce her.
그 때 그의 꿈에 천사가 나타나서 성모마리아의 임신은 성령으로 말미암은 것이니 두려워하지 말고 그녀를 아내로 맞이하라고 지시하였다.
At that time, an angel appeared to him in a dream and instructed him not to be afraid to take her as his wife because the pregnancy of the Virgin Mary was by the Holy Spirit.
잠에서 깨어난 성 요셉은 천사가 명령한 대로 성모마리아를 아내로 맞아들였다.
Saint Joseph awoke and took the Virgin Mary as his wife, as the angel had commanded.
그러나 성모마리아와 잠자리를 같이하지는 않았다.
But he did not sleep with the Virgin Mary.
성 엘리사벳은 오랫동안 임신하지 못하였다가 역시 천사 가브리엘의 예고대로 기적적으로 임신하였다.
Saint Elisabeth had not been able to conceive for a long time, but also miraculously conceived as predicted by the angel Gabriel.
성모마리아의 인사말을 듣고 성 엘리사벳은 성령으로 가득 차 그녀에게 당신은 여인들 가운데에서 가장 복되시며 당신 태중의 아기도 복되십니다.
Upon hearing the greeting of the Virgin Mary, St. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and said to her, “You are most blessed among women, and the child in your womb is blessed.”
내 주님의 어머니께서 저에게 오시다니 어찌 된 일입니까?
How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me?
보십시오! 당신의 인사말 소리가 제 귀에 들리자 저의 태 안에서 아기가 즐거워 뛰놀았습니다.
Behold, the baby in my womb leaped for joy as the sound of your greetings reached my ears.
행복하십니다. “주님께서 하신 말씀이 이루어지리라고 믿으신 분!”이라고 큰 소리로 외쳤다.
You are happy. “ The one who believed that the word of the Lord would be fulfilled!”
그러자 성모마리아께서는 이렇게 말하였다. “내 영혼이 주님을 찬송하고 내 마음이 나의 구원자 하느님 안에서 기뻐 뛰니 그분께서 당신 종의 비천함을 굽어보셨기 때문입니다.”
Then the Virgin Mary said My soul praises the Lord, and my heart leaps for joy in God my Savior because he has looked down on the lowliness of his servant.
이제부터 과연 모든 세대가 나를 행복하다 하리니, 전능하신 분께서 나에게 큰일을 하셨기 때문입니다.
From now on indeed all generations will call me happy because the Almighty has done great things for me.
그분의 이름은 거룩하고, 그분의 자비는 대대로 당신을 경외하는 이들에게 미칩니다.
Holy is his name, and his mercy extends to those who fear him from generation to generation.
로마 황제 아우구스투스에게서 칙령이 내려져 로마 제국의 모든 신민이 호적 등록을 하게 되었다.
그래서 성 요셉도 갈릴래아 지방의 나자렛을 떠나 자기 고향인 유다 지방의 베들레헴으로 갔다.
So Saint Joseph also left Nazareth in Galilee and went to Bethlehem in Judea, his hometown.
성모마리아도 성 요셉과 함께 베들레헴으로 갔으나 숙박할 여관을 찾지 못했기 때문에 마굿간을 해산 장소로 이용하였고 사내아기가 태어나니 바로 예수님이었다.
The Virgin Mary also went to Bethlehem with Saint Joseph, but because she could not find an inn to stay, she used a stable as a place for childbirth, and a baby boy was born, who was Jesus.
루카 복음서에서는 예수님께서 태어난 날 밤에 들판에서 자기 양 떼를 지키는 목자들에게 천사가 나타나서 베들레헴의 구유에서 메시아가 태어났다는 소식을 알려 주었다.
In the Gospel of Luke, on the night Jesus was born, an angel appeared to shepherds tending their flocks in the fields and informed them that the Messiah had been born in a manger in Bethlehem.
그러자 목자들은 서둘러 가서 성모마리아와 성 요셉과 구유에 누운 아기를 찾아내고 천사가 자기들에게 전한 말을 알려 주었다.
Then the shepherds hurried and found the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger, and told them what the angel had told them.
그리고 하느님을 찬양하고 돌아갔다고 한다.
And it is said that they returned, praising God.
이로인하여 하느님의 은총에 힘입어 성자 다음으로 모든 천사와 사람들 위에 들어 높임을 받으신 성모 마리아는 그리스도의 신비에 참여한 지극히 거룩한 ‘하느님의 어머니’로서 교회에서 특별한 공경을 받아오고 있다.
For this reason, the Virgin Mary, who, thanks to the grace of God, was lifted up and exalted above all angels and men after the Son, has been receiving special veneration in the Church as the most holy 'Mother of God' who participated in the mystery of Christ.
