오랫동안 아이가 없었던 성 로코의 부모는 하느님께 열심히 기도한 결과로
1295년 프랑스 몽펠리에 지방에서 시장의 아들로서 성 로코는 가슴에 붉은 십자가점을
지니고 태어났다.
Saint Roch's parents, who had no children for a long time, prayed earnestly to God,
and in 1295, as the son of a mayor in Montpellier, France,
Saint Roch was born with a red cross on his chest.
신앙심이 두터웠던 부모님 곁에서 성 로코는 어려서부터 정결하고 경건한 마음으로
신심을 키워갔다.
Saint Roch grew up in faith with a clean and devout heart from a young age
by his parents who were deeply religious.
스무 살 때 부모님은 모두 돌아가셨고 성 로코는 아버지의 유언대로 물려받은 막대한 재산을
모두 가난한 이들에게 나눠주고 이탈리아의 로마(Roma)로 성지순례를 떠났다.
When he was 20 years old, both of his parents passed away, and Saint Roch distributed all of the enormous property he had inherited to the poor according to his father's will and left for a pilgrimage to Rome, Italy.
당시 이탈리아는 곳곳에서 전쟁이 일어나고 흑사병이 창궐해 많은 이들이 죽어가고 있었고
성 로코는 자신의 몸도 돌보지 않고 헌신적으로 전쟁과 전염병으로 고통 받는 환자들을
돌보았다.
At that time, war broke out in many places in Italy, and many people were dying due to the Black Death, and Saint Roch devotedly took care of patients suffering from war and plague without taking care of his own body.
하지만 그 역시 피아첸차(Piacenza)에서 전염병에 감염되어 극심한 고통을 겪었다.
However, he too contracted the plague at Piacenza and suffered excruciating pain.
성 로코가 병에 걸리고 거동이 불편해지자 그에게 많은 도움을 받은 마을 사람들조차 매몰차게
그를 마을 밖으로 쫓아냈다.
When Saint Roch fell ill and became incapacitated, even the villagers who had been helped by him drove him out of the village.
성 로코는 불만없이 인적이 드문 숲으로 피해 갔고, 그곳에서 우물을 발견해 그 물로
목숨을 연명했다.
Saint Roch escaped to a forest where people were rare without complaint, and there he found a well and lived with the water.
그러던 어느 날 개 한 마리가 나타나 갓 구운 빵을 가져다주기 시작했다.
Then one day a dog appeared and started bringing freshly baked bread.
인근에 살던 개 주인인 고타르 백작은 자신의 개가 매일 새로 구운 빵을 물고서 숲으로 사라지자
이를 이상하게 여겨 그 뒤를 따라갔다가 놀라운 광경을 보게 되었다.
Count Gotthard, the owner of a dog who lived nearby, found it strange that his dog disappeared into the woods carrying freshly baked bread every day.
그 개가 숲 속에 병들어 누워 있는 성 로코에게 빵을 가져다주고
그의 상처에서 흘러나오는 고름을 핥아주고 있었기 때문이다.
Because the dog was bringing bread to Saint Roch, who was lying sick in the woods,
and licking the pus from his wounds.
백작: “한동안 환자들을 돌보셨다면서 왜 여기 계십니까?”
Count: "Why are you here, you've been taking care of the sick for a while?"
백작: “참 딱하십니다. 처음부터 재산을 나누어 주지 않았더라면, 재산을 잃을 일도 없고
환자들을 돌보지 않았다면, 이렇게 건강을 잃을 일도 없었을 거 아닙니까?”
The Count: “You are so pitiful. If you hadn't divided your property from
the beginning, you wouldn't have lost it, and if you hadn't taken care of the sick,
wouldn't you have lost your health like this?”
성 로코: “처음부터 주님의 것이었으니, 잃은 것이 아니라 돌려 드린 거죠.
Saint Roch: “It was the Lord's from the beginning; it was not lost, but returned.
이에 감동한 백작은 성 로코가 건강을 회복하도록 도와주었다.
Impressed by this, the count helped Saint Roch recover his health.
성 로코는 기적적으로 완치되었고, 이때부터 그에게서 치유의 은사가 풍성히 드러나
많은 병자들이 도움을 받았다.
Saint Roch was miraculously cured, and since then the gift of healing was abundantly revealed in him, and many sick people were helped.
건강을 되찾은 성 로코는 고향으로 돌아갔지만 전직 시장의 아들인 그를 아무도
알아보지 못했다.
After recovering his health, Saint Roch returned to his hometown, but no one recognized him as the former mayor's son.
오히려 성 로코는 당시 전쟁 중이던 이웃나라에서 순례자로 변장해 보낸 스파이라는
누명을 쓰고 체포되어 5년 동안 감옥에 갇히셨다.
Rather, Saint Roch was arrested and imprisoned for five years on the false charge of being a spy disguised as a pilgrim from a neighboring country that was at war.
자신의 신분을 밝히지 않고 수감생활을 하던 성 로코는 결국 감옥에서 숨을 거두셨다.
Saint Roch, who was imprisoned without revealing his identity, eventually died in prison.
