어느 날 아우렐리아누스 황제가 한 번은 프톨레마이스로 여행을 가게 되었다.
One day, Emperor Aurelianus was on a trip to Ptolemais.
그리고 그곳에서 스스로 십자가의 상징을 지니고 자랑스럽게 드러내는 성 바오로를 만났다.
And there he met Saint Paul, who proudly displayed himself bearing the symbol of the cross.
황제는 즉시 성 바오로를 보자마자 체포해 감옥에 가두었다.
As soon as the emperor saw Saint Paul, he arrested him and put him in prison.
다음날 재판관이 심문할 때, 성 바오로는 공개적으로 당당하게 그리스도께 대한
신앙을 고백했다.
When questioned by the judges the next day, Saint Paul openly and proudly confessed his faith in Christ.
그로 인해 성 바오로는 극심한 고문을 당했다.
As a result, Saint Paul was subjected to extreme torture.
성 바오로가 고통당하는 것을 지켜본 성녀 율리아나는 모든 사람 앞에서 황제의 불의와
잔혹함에 대해 고발했다.
Saint Juliana, who witnessed the suffering of Saint Paul, accused the emperor of
injustice and cruelty in front of everyone.
그래서 성녀 율리아나 또한 체포되어 같은 방법으로 고문을 받았다.
So Saint Juliana was also arrested and tortured in the same way.
거룩한 남매는 무수히 매를 맞고 날카로운 쇠 갈고리로 온몸이 찢기고 뜨겁게 달군 쇠로
지지는 고문을 당했다.
The holy brother and sister were beaten countless times, their whole bodies were
torn with sharp iron hooks, and they were tortured with hot iron.
그러나 그 모든 고문에도 불구하고 주님께 대한 거룩한 남매의 고백을 막을 수는 없었다.
However, in spite of all the torture, they could not stop the holy brother and sister
from confessing to the Lord.
그들을 고문하던 세 명은 군인들은 강인한 정신력을 지닌 남매에게 충격을 받아
그리스도를 믿게 되었다.
The three soldiers who were torturing them believed in Christ after being shocked
by the strong mentality of the brother and sister.
하느님의 선택을 받은 세 명의 군인들, 즉 콰드라투스(Quadratus)와 아카키우스(Acacius)와
스트라토니쿠스(Stratonicus)는 그 즉시 처형되었다.
The three chosen soldiers of God, Quadratus, Acacius and Stratonicus,
were immediately executed.
성녀 율리아나를 고문하던 사람이 한 번은 만약 그리스도를 배반하면 그녀와 결혼하겠다는
약속으로 유혹하기도 했다.
The torturer of Saint Juliana once tempted her with the promise of marrying her
if she betrayed Christ.
하지만 성녀 율리아나는 그 제안을 단호히 거부하고 변함없는 마음을 유지했다.
However, Saint Juliana firmly rejected the proposal and maintained her unchanging heart.
황제의 명령으로 성녀 율리아나를 더럽히기 위해 평판이 안 좋은 집으로 보냈지만,
그곳에서도 그녀는 하느님의 도우심으로 자신을 지킬 수 있었다.
By order of the emperor, Saint Juliana was sent to a house with a bad reputation to tarnish her, but even there she was able to defend herself with God's help.
황제는 거룩한 남매를 화형에 처하려고 했으나, 군중들이 몰려들어 고통받는 순교자들을 보며
점점 크게 웅성거리자 즉시 참수형에 처하도록 명령했다.
The emperor was about to have the holy brother and sister burned at the stake, but when the crowd gathered and the murmur grew louder at the sight of the suffering martyrs, he immediately ordered them to be beheaded.
거룩한 남매는 웃는 얼굴로 처형장에 들어서며 다음과 같이 하느님께 찬양하였다.
The holy brother and sister entered the execution ground with smiling faces and
praised God as follows.
"주께서 우리를 성가신 것에서 구원하셨고 우리를 미워하는 자들을 부끄럽게 하셨음이로다."
"For the Lord has saved us from nuisance, and has put to shame those who hate us."
