성녀 베로니카(Saint Veronica)는 예수님께서 십자가를 지고 골고타로 올라가실 때 예수님의 얼굴에서 흘러내리는 피땀을 닦아 준 예루살렘의 어느 부인이다.
Saint Veronica is a woman in Jerusalem who wiped the bloody sweat from Jesus' face as he carried the cross to Golgotha.
그녀는 머리에 두르는 천으로 예수님의 거룩한 얼굴에서 피땀을 닦아드렸는데, 나중에 살펴보니 그 천에 주님의 얼굴 모습이 새겨져 있었다고 한다.
It is said that she wiped the blood and sweat from the holy face of Jesus with a cloth wrapped around her head, and when she later examined it, she found that the image of the Lord's face was engraved on the cloth.
베로니카(Veronica)의 의미는 ‘진실한 형상’ 또는 ‘그리스도의 참모습’이라는 뜻이다.
The meaning of Veronica is ‘the true image’ or ‘the true face of Christ.’
전승에 따르면 비잔틴제국의 황제가 에데사 왕으로부터 성녀 베로니카(Saint Veronica)의 수건을 사들여 콘스탄티노플로 가져가 성당에 모셨다.
According to tradition, the emperor of the Byzantine Empire purchased the veil of Saint Veronica from the king of Edessa and brought it to Constantinople to enshrine it in the cathedral.
이후 콘스탄티노플을 함락한 십자군에 의해 프랑스로 옮겨졌다가 로마로 가져와 성 베드로 대성전의 성녀 베로니카(Saint Veronica) 경당에서 보관하였다.
