성 에즈라(Saint Ezra)는 정통 고위 사제가문에서 태어났으며 에즈라(Ezra)의 의미는 "주님이 도우신다" 라는 뜻이다.
Saint Ezra was born into a family of high-ranking Orthodox priests, and the meaning of Ezra is “The Lord helps.”
페르시아 임금은 유배 생활을 하던 이스라일 민족들에게 자신의 땅으로 돌아가라고 칙령을 내렸는데 그는 임금에게서 유프라테스 서부 지방의 관료임면권과 재판권을 받았다.
The king of Persia issued an edict telling the Israelites who had been in exile to return to their own land, and he received from the king the power to appoint and dismiss officials in the western Euphrates region and the power to judge.
그러나 그는 주로 하느님의 율법을 연구하고 실천할 뿐만 아니라 이스라엘에게 규정과 법을 가르치는 일에 집중하였다. 이를 반영하는 일화가 이민족과 결혼한 이들에 대한 조치였다.

이는 많은 동포가 이민족들과 혼인하여 민족의 순수성이 훼손되었기 때문에 이를 막고자 했던 것이다. 그 뒤 그는 페르시아로 돌아갔으리라고 본다.
