성 요엘(Saint Joel)은 ‘하느님은 참 하느님이시다’라는 뜻을 가지고 있다. 그러나 구약성서 어느 곳에서도 그에 관한 언급되지 않는다.

Saint Joel means ‘God is the true God.’ However, there is no mention of him anywhere in the Old Testament. 

 

그가 유대인이고 예루살렘에서 활동하였음은 분명한 것으로 보인다. 그는 성전에서 거행되는 종교 의식을 중요하게 생각한 것으로 보아 전례 예언자였으리라고 추측된다.

It seems clear that he was Jewish and active in Jerusalem. It is presumed that he was a liturgical prophet, as he considered the religious ceremonies held in the temple to be important. 

 

또한 그는 선배 예언자들이 이미 공포한 말씀을 다시 선포하고 그들의 어구나 어휘를 인용하고 재활용한 것으로 보아 성서 예언자로 보기도 한다.

In addition, he is seen as a Biblical prophet because he re-proclaimed words already proclaimed by previous prophets and quoted and recycled their phrases and vocabulary. 

 

오랜 가뭄으로 땅이 말라 터진 때에 메뚜기 떼가 습격한 상황 속에서 그는 등장하여 참회하고 회개를 촉구하며 주님의 말씀을 선포했다.

When the land was dry due to a long drought and a swarm of locusts attacked, he appeared, repented, urged repentance, and proclaimed the word of the Lord.

 

“옷이 아니라 너희 마음을 찢어라.”

“Tear your hearts, not your clothes.”
