성 헨리코(Saint Henry II)는 973년 5월 6일 태어났다. 사망한 부친의 뒤를 이어 바이에른(Bayern)의 공작이 되었고 998년에는 성녀 쿠네군다(Saint Cunigunde)와 결혼하였다.

Saint Henry II was born on May 6, 973. He succeeded his deceased father as Duke of Bavaria and married Saint Cunigunde in 998. 

 

결혼 첫날밤에 성녀 쿠네군다(Saint Cunigunde)는 남편에게 정결한 마음으로 하느님께 일생을 봉헌하기 위해 동정을 지키고 싶다는 뜻을 전했다.

On her first wedding night, Saint Cunigunde told her husband that she wanted to remain a virgin in order to dedicate her life to God with a pure heart. 

 

성 헨리코(Saint Henry II) 또한 평소 그러한 희망이 있었다며 일생 남매처럼 지내되 세상에는 알리지 말자며 동정서원을 발했다.

Saint Henry II also said that he had always had such a hope and made a vow of virginity, saying that they should live as brother and sister for the rest of their lives but not tell the world about it. 

 

그가 황제에 오르는 과정은 쉽지 않았으나 소수의 귀족과 교회의 도움으로 왕으로 선출되었다.

The process of his becoming emperor was not easy, but he was elected king with the help of a few nobles and the church. 

 

그는 젊어서 사제직에 관심이 있었고, 결혼 후에도 수도자가 되려는 마음이 있었으나 자신의 직책상 뜻을 이룰 수 없었다. 하지만 그의 신심은 수도자에 못지않았다고 한다.

He was interested in the priesthood when he was young, and wanted to become a monk after marriage, but was unable to achieve his wish due to his position. However, it is said that his devotion was no less than that of a monk. 

 

그는 1024년 7월 13일 선종하였다.

He died on July 13, 1024.
