성 가밀로 데 렐리스(Saint Camillus de Lellis)는 1550년 5월 25일 이탈리아에서 태어났다.

Saint Camillus de Lellis was born in Italy on May 25, 1550. 

 

청소년 시절부터 노름을 좋아하고 군대를 동경하던 그는 입대하고자 했으나 오른쪽 발에 궤양이 생겨 연기하였다.

He loved gambling and admired the military since he was a teenager. He wanted to join the army, but postponed it because of an ulcer on his right foot. 

 

병원에 입원해 치료를 받고 병원에서 조수로 일하던 중 노름을 하다 쫓겨났다. 다시 군에 입대해 이탈리아를 침략한 터키군과 여러 전투에서 맞서 싸웠다.

After being hospitalized and receiving treatment, he was kicked out for gambling while working as an assistant at the hospital. He rejoined the military and fought in several battles against the Turkish army that had invaded Italy. 

 

1574년경에는 청소년 때부터 습관이 된 도박에 빠져 빈털터리가 되었고, 이듬해에는 군대에서도 나와 이곳저곳을 방황하다가 우연히 수도원의 공사장에서 일자리를 얻게 되었다.

Around 1574, he became penniless due to gambling, which had become a habit he had developed since his youth. The following year, he left the army and wandered around until he happened to get a job at a monastery construction site. 

 

어느 날 한 수사의 설교를 듣고 심경의 변화가 일어난 그는 수도자가 되고자 수도회에 지원하였다. 하지만 예전의 상처가 도져 입회할 수 없다는 말을 듣고 치료를 위해 병원으로 갔다.

One day, after hearing a monk's sermon, he had a change of heart and applied to the monastery to become a monk. However, I was told that I could not join due to my previous injuries, so I went to the hospital for treatment. 

 

치료 이후 수도원에 들어갔으나 상처가 덧나면서 결국 나올 수밖에 없었다. 그는 이 병으로 일생 고생해야만 했다.

After treatment, he entered a monastery, but as his wounds worsened, he had no choice but to leave. He had to suffer from this disease his whole life. 

 

다시 병원으로 돌아온 그는 환자들을 돌보는 일에 투신하기로 했다. 그렇게 열심히 일하면서 그는 병원의 회계를 담당하는 최고 관리자까지 되었다.

When he returned to the hospital, he decided to devote himself to caring for patients. By working so hard, he became the top manager in charge of the hospital's accounting. 

 

이런 경험을 통해 그는 병원의 놀라운 상황과 여러 부정적인 문제에도 눈을 뜨게 되었다. 그래서 그는 환자들을 돌보는 일에 남은 인생을 바칠 결심을 하고 뜻있는 간호사들과 함께 가난한 병자들의 가정을 방문하여 정성껏 돌보았다.

Through this experience, he opened his eyes to the surprising conditions and many negative problems in hospitals. So, he decided to devote the rest of his life to caring for patients, and together with meaningful nurses, he visited the homes of poor sick people and cared for them with care. 

 

1584년 사제품을 받은 그는 이미 함께 봉사하던 이들과 협조자를 모아 ‘병자 간호 성직 수도회(Camillians)’를 설립했다.

After being ordained a priest in 1584, he gathered those who had already served with him and his collaborators and established the ‘Camillians’, a religious order for the nursing of the sick. 

 

무엇보다 병원의 청결을 중요하게 생각한 그는 항상 창문을 열어 환기를 시키고, 환자들이 적당한 음식을 먹도록 하고, 전염병일 경우는 적절히 격리하는 방법 등을 활용해 병자들의 치료에 도움을 주었다.

He considered the cleanliness of the hospital to be more important than anything else and helped treat the sick by always opening windows to provide ventilation, ensuring that patients ate appropriate food, and properly isolating patients in case of infectious diseases. 

 

그와 동료들은 항상 숨을 거두는 환자들 곁을 끝까지 지켰고, 임종자들의 장례 등에도 큰 관심을 보여 세상 사람들로부터 높은 칭송을 받았다.

He and his colleagues always stayed by the side of dying patients until the end, and showed great interest in the funerals of the dying, receiving high praise from people around the world. 

 

1614년 7월 14일 병에 걸려 건강이 나빠진 그는 마지막을 로마에서 맞이하고 싶다는 소망대로 로마로 돌아와서 선종하였다.

On July 14, 1614, he fell ill and his health deteriorated, so he returned to Rome and died, as he had hoped to spend his last days there.
