성 보나벤투라(Saint Bonaventure)는 이탈리아에서 태어났고 1238년에 작은 형제회(Franciscan Order) 수도자가 되었다.

Saint Bonaventure was born in Italy and became a monk of the Franciscan Order in 1238. 

 

그는 1248~1255년까지 파리 대학교에서 신학과 성서를 가르쳤다. 그러나 새로운 탁발 수도자를 반대하던 교수들 때문에 그의 강의는 중단되고 말았다.

He taught theology and Bible at the University of Paris from 1248 to 1255. However, his lectures were interrupted by professors who opposed the new mendicant monks. 

 

그래서 그는 반대자들의 공격에 대항하여 탁발 수도회를 옹호하는 논쟁에 뛰어들었다. 마침내 1256년 교황은 탁발 수도회에 대한 공격을 중단시켰다.

So he entered into a debate defending the mendicant order against the attacks of its opponents. Finally, in 1256, the Pope stopped the attacks on the mendicant orders. 

 

그는 당시 수도회 내부의 분쟁들을 화해시켰고 성 프란치스코에 관한 전기문 집필을 위탁받아 "아시시의 성 프란치스코 대전기"를 완성했다.

He reconciled internal disputes within the religious order at the time and was commissioned to write a biography of Saint Francis, completing the "Biography of Saint Francis of Assisi." 

 

1272년 그는 추기경으로 임명되었으나 1274년 교황을 도와 로마와 동방교회의 일치를 논의하는 등 중요한 역할을 했으나 선종했다.

In 1272, he was appointed a cardinal, but he died in 1274, although he played an important role, including helping the Pope in discussing the unity of Rome and the Eastern Church.
