성녀 마리아 막달레나 포스텔(Saint Marie-Madeleine Postel)은 1756년 11월 28일 프랑스에서 태어났으며 그녀는 다른 아이들보다 4년이나 빠른 8살 때 첫영성체를 했다.
Saint Marie-Madeleine Postel was born in France on November 28, 1756, and received her first Holy Communion at the age of eight, four years earlier than other children.
그 후 지방 학교를 나온 후 베네딕토 수녀회에서 교육을 받으며 하느님께 자신을 봉헌하는 생활을 소망하였으나 결국 사적인 서원만 발하였다.
After graduating from a local school, she received education at the Benedictine Sisters and hoped to live a life of consecration to God, but in the end she only made a private vow.
기도와 보속을 실천하던 그녀는 1798년에 작은 형제회 3회원(Third Order of Saint Francis)으로 입회하였다.
Practicing prayer and penance, she was admitted to the Third Order of Saint Francis in 1798.
마침내 프랑스 혁명이 끝나자 그녀는 다른 동료들과 더불어 혁명의 후유증, 특히 신자들의 종교적 무관심을 치유하고 교육하는데 전력을 다하였다.
When the French Revolution finally ended, she, along with other colleagues, did her best to heal and educate the aftereffects of the revolution, especially the religious indifference of believers.
그래서 여성 교우들을 모집하고 교육을 목적으로 하는 여자 수도회를 설립하고자 노력하였다.
Therefore, efforts were made to recruit female believers and establish a women's religious order for the purpose of education.
이러한 그녀의 노력이 계기가 되어 1807년 61세의 늦은 나이에 ‘자비의 그리스도인 학교 수녀회(The Sisters of Christian Schools of Mercy)’를 설립하였다.
Her efforts led to the establishment of ‘The Sisters of Christian Schools of Mercy’ in 1807 at the late age of 61.
그녀는 수녀회 설립 초기에 많은 난관에 부딪혔지만 절대로 좌절하지 않고 그 모든 것을 하느님의 도우심으로 극복하였다.
Although she encountered many difficulties in the early days of establishing the convent, she never became discouraged and overcame them all with God's help.
거의 40여 년 동안 수녀회를 위해 피나는 노력을 한 그녀는 1846년 7월 16일 선종했다.
After working tirelessly for the nuns for nearly 40 years, she died on July 16, 1846.
