폴란드의 성녀 헤드비지스(Saint Jadwiga of Poland)는 헝가리에서 왕의 막내딸로 태어났다.

Saint Jadwiga of Poland was born in Hungary as the king's youngest daughter. 

 

1384년 10월 16일 아버지의 뒤를 이어 그녀는 폴란드 왕국의 여왕이 되었다.

On October 16, 1384, she succeeded her father as queen of the Kingdom of Poland. 

 

그녀는 여왕으로 등극하면서 결혼을 포기하고 오직 폴란드 백성을 위해 봉사하는 것이 자신에게 맡겨진 하느님의 뜻임을 깨닫고 그에 순명하기로 결심했다.

When she became queen, she gave up marriage and decided to obey God's will for her to serve only the people of Poland. 

 

그리고 13살 때 그녀는 리투아니아의 야기엘로(Jagiello)와 정략결혼을 함으로써 폴란드와 리투아니아 간의 평화를 거의 400년 동안이나 지속시키는 계기를 마련했다.

And at the age of 13, she entered into an arranged marriage with Jagiello of Lithuania, paving the way for nearly 400 years of peace between Poland and Lithuania. 

 

그녀는 그리스도를 위해 자신의 전 생애를 봉헌하고자 노력했다. 폴란드뿐만 아니라 리투아니아의 복음화에도 큰 발자취를 남긴 그녀는 왕국 내의 가난한 이와 병자들을 위해 병원을 건립하고 구호와 자선 활동을 활발히 전개했다.

She tried to consecrate her whole life for Christ. She left a significant mark on the evangelization not only in Poland but also in Lithuania, building hospitals for the poor and sick in the kingdom and actively carrying out relief and charity work. 

 

그러나 그녀는 1399년 오랜 기다림 끝에 나은 딸이 사망한 후 며칠 뒤인 7월 17일 산후 열병으로 크라쿠프에서 선종했다.

However, after a long wait in 1399, she died in Krakow from postpartum fever on July 17, a few days after the death of her older daughter.
