성녀 심포로사(Saint Symphorosa)는 하드리아누스 황제의 그리스도교 박해 당시 로마 근교에서 일곱 아들과 함께 살고 있었다.

Saint Symphorosa was living with her seven sons near Rome during the persecution of Christians by Emperor Hadrian. 

 

황제는 호화스러운 새 궁전을 짓고 나서 그 궁전의 운명이 그녀 가족이 바치는 희생 제사에 좌우된다는 신탁을 듣고 깜짝 놀랐다.

After building a luxurious new palace, the emperor was astonished to hear an oracle telling her that its fate would depend on the sacrifices offered by her family. 

 

황제는 그녀 가족을 신전으로 유인하여 신들에게 희생 제사를 바치도록 하려 했으나 모든 시도가 실패하자 그녀를 헤르쿨레스(Hercules) 신전으로 끌고 오라고 명령했다.

The emperor tried to lure her family to the temple to offer sacrifices to the gods, but when all attempts failed, he ordered her to be brought to the temple of Hercules. 

 

그녀는 남편의 모범을 따라 순교할 결심을 하고 황제의 요구를 용감하게 거절했다. 황제는 그녀에게 갖가지 고문을 자행한 다음 목에 무거운 돌을 매달아 강에 던져 버렸다.

She decided to follow her husband's example and become a martyr, and courageously refused the emperor's demands. The emperor subjected her to various tortures, then hung a heavy stone around her neck and threw it into the river. 

 

그녀의 오빠가 그녀의 시신을 수습해 도시 외곽에 묻어주었다. 다음날 황제는 신들에게 희생 제사를 바치기 위해 그녀의 일곱 아들을 불러들였다.

Her brother retrieved her body and buried it outside the city. The next day, the emperor summoned her seven sons to offer sacrifices to the gods. 

 

일곱 아들 역시 부모처럼 이교 신상 앞에 분향하기를 끝까지 거부하며 신앙을 지켰다. 황제는 그들 모두를 헤르쿨레스(Hercules) 신전 공사를 위해 세워둔 7개의 말뚝에 묶은 뒤 각기 다른 방법으로 고문한 후 처형하였다.

Like their parents, the seven sons also maintained their faith by refusing to burn incense in front of pagan gods. The emperor tied them all to seven stakes erected for the construction of the Temple of Hercules, tortured them in different ways, and then executed them.
