성녀 마크리나(Saint Macrina the Younger)는 어려서부터 어머니에게 읽고 쓰는 법을 배우고 특별히 성경에 대한 교육을 충실히 받았다.

Saint Macrina the Younger learned to read and write from her mother from a young age and received faithful education, especially about the Bible. 

 

그녀의 아버지는 그녀가 12살 때 경건한 젊은 변호사와 약혼을 주선하였다. 그러나 약혼자가 갑자기 결혼식 전에 죽자 그녀는 결혼보다는 일생을 하느님께 봉헌하기로 마음먹었다.

Her father arranged her engagement to a pious young lawyer when she was 12 years old. However, when her fiancé suddenly died before the wedding, she decided to dedicate her life to God rather than marry. 

 

349년에 아버지가 돌아가신 후 그녀는 어머니를 도와 9명의 동생을 돌보고 가르쳤다.

After her father died in 349, she helped her mother care for and teach her nine younger siblings. 

 

특히 성 대 바실리오(Saint Basil the Great)가 아테네(Athenae)에서 최고의 교육을 받고 고향에 돌아왔을 때 자만심이 강한 청년이었지만, 그녀를 통해 겸손을 배웠다.

In particular, Saint Basil the Great was a proud young man when he returned home after receiving the best education in Athens, but he learned humility through her. 

 

동생이 갑자기 사고로 세상을 떠나자 큰 충격에 빠진 어머니를 위로하였다. 그녀는 어머니에게 “희망을 가지지 못하는 다른 사람들처럼 슬퍼하지 말라”는 성경 말씀을 상기시키며 부활의 희망으로 용기를 내도록 영감을 주었다.

When my younger brother suddenly passed away in an accident, I comforted my mother, who was in great shock. She inspired her mother to be courageous in the hope of the resurrection, reminding her of the Bible's words: “Do not mourn like other people who have no hope.” 

 

그녀는 어머니를 설득해 가족 재산을 자녀들에게 나누어주고 노예들을 해방한 후 어머니와 함께 수도 생활을 시작했다.

She persuaded her mother to share the family property with her children, freed the slaves, and began a monastic life with her mother. 

 

해방된 많은 여성 노예들이 함께하고자 찾아오자 그녀는 그곳에 수녀원을 짓고 공동으로 기도하고 일하는 수도 생활을 시작했다.

When many freed female slaves came to join her, she built a convent there and began a monastic life of praying and working together. 

 

어머니가 선종한 후 그녀는 계속해서 수녀들을 이끌었고, 남은 재산을 모두 팔아 가난한 사람들을 돕고 손수 일을 하며 번 돈으로 널빤지 위에서 자며 검소하게 생활했다.

After her mother died, she continued to lead the nuns, sold all her remaining possessions to help the poor, and lived frugally, sleeping on boards with the money she earned through manual labor. 

 

그녀는 많은 기적을 행하고 사람들로부터 큰 존경을 받았다. 그녀는 평생 자신에게 엄격하고 모든 일에 절제하는 삶을 살았다.

She performed many miracles and was greatly respected by the people. Throughout her life, she was strict with herself and lived a life of moderation in everything. 

 

그는 널빤지 침대에 누워서 죽음을 준비하면서도 유쾌함을 잊지 않은 그녀는 저녁 기도 후에 평화로이 선종했다.

She, who did not forget cheerfulness even as she prepared for death while lying on a plank bed, died peacefully after evening prayers.
