엘리야(Elijah)는 기원전 9세기경 북이스라엘에서 활동하였던 예언자이다. 엘리야(Elijah)의 의미는 ‘나의 하느님은 야훼이시다’이다.

Elijah was a prophet who worked in northern Israel around the 9th century BC. The meaning of Elijah is ‘My God is Yahweh.’ 

 

그에 대한 많은 이야기가 전해지고 있지만 그의 활동 시작에 대해서 자세히 알려진 바가 없다.

There are many stories about him, but no details are known about the beginning of his activities. 

 

그에 관한 역사적인 모습은 기적적인 전설들 속에 감추어져 있다. 심지어는 그의 이름조차도 그의 열성을 반영하는 가명이라고 보는 이도 있다.

His historical features are hidden in miraculous legends. Some even see his name as a pseudonym that reflects his passion. 

 

그는 야훼 신앙 수호의 영웅으로, 진실한 하느님의 말씀을 말하는 예언자이며 왕가의 압박에 저항하며 살아있는 신앙을 수호한 예언자라고 전해진다.

He is said to be a hero who defended the faith of Yahweh, a prophet who spoke the true word of God, and a prophet who defended the living faith by resisting the pressure of the royal family. 

 

또한 그는 그리스도교에서 메시아 전승과 연결되었기 때문에 메시아의 선구자로 여긴다. 신약성서는 여러 문맥에서 그를 언급하고 있다.

Additionally, because he is connected to the messianic tradition in Christianity, he is considered a forerunner of the Messiah. The New Testament mentions him in several contexts. 

 

요한 복음서에서는 세례자 요한을 새로운 엘리야로 보았다. 그러나 신약성서에서 무엇보다도 모세가 율법을 떠오르게 하며 엘리야는 예언자를 떠오르게 하고 예수는 그것을 완성하러 온 것으로 보고 있다.

In the Gospel of John, John the Baptist is seen as the new Elijah. However, in the New Testament, more than anything, Moses reminds us of the law, Elijah reminds us of the prophets, and Jesus comes to fulfill it.
