다니엘(Daniel)은 ‘하느님께서 판결하신다’는 뜻으로 아이들이 출생할 때 많이 붙여진 이름이다.

Daniel means ‘God makes the decision’ and is a name often given to children when they are born. 

 

그는 유다 임금이 바빌론으로 끌려갈 때 함께 갔다. 그는 포로로 끌려 온 자기 민족을 위한 예언자로서 활동했다.

He went with the king of Judah when he was taken to Babylon. He acted as a prophet for his people who were taken captive. 

 

또한 그는 바빌론 임금의 꿈을 정확히 해석해줌으로써 임금의 총애를 받았다. 그러나 그에게 최대의 시련은 바빌론 임금이 우상에 절을 해야 한다는 명령을 내리자 그는 결코 하느님을 버리고 우상을 섬길 수 없었다.

He also gained the favor of the king of Babylon by accurately interpreting his dreams. However, his greatest trial was when the king of Babylon ordered him to bow down to idols, and he could never abandon God and serve idols. 

 

그들은 고발당해 타오르는 불가마 속으로 던져졌으나 주님의 천사가 내려와 불가마 속에 있는 그들을 구해주었다.

They were accused and thrown into the burning furnace, but the angel of the Lord came down and saved them from the furnace. 

 

그는 수많은 환시를 통해 미래의 일들을 보았고, 예루살렘의 복구와 하느님의 정의가 이루게 될 의인들의 결정적 승리와 부활에 대해 선포했다.

He saw future events through numerous visions and proclaimed the restoration of Jerusalem and the decisive victory and resurrection of the righteous that God's justice would achieve. 

 

이렇게 그는 하느님께 대한 굳은 믿음으로 희망을 전한 예언자였다.

In this way, he was a prophet who delivered hope with a firm faith in God.
