비르지타(Bridget)의 의미는 ‘지위가 높은 사람’을 뜻한다.
The meaning of Birgitta is ‘a person of high status.’
스웨덴의 성녀 비르지타(Saint Bridget of Sweden)는 1303년 스웨덴의 총독의 아버지의 딸로 태어났다. 그러나 그녀가 12살 되던 해 어머니가 사망하였는데 그때부터 계시를 체험하였다고 한다.
Saint Bridget of Sweden was born in 1303 as the daughter of the father of a Swedish governor. However, when she was 12 years old, her mother died, and it is said that she experienced revelation from then on.
그녀는 불과 14살의 어린 나이로 결혼하여 8명의 자녀를 두었다. 그러나 그녀의 큰딸이 결혼에 실패하고 또 그녀의 막내아들이 사망하자 그녀는 순례여행을 떠났다.
She married at the young age of just 14 and had eight children. However, when her eldest daughter failed to marry and her youngest son died, she went on a pilgrimage.
1344년에 남편이 사망하자 그녀는 알바스트라의 시토회 수도원(Cistercian Alvastra Abbey)에서 극도로 엄격한 생활을 하면서 4년을 지냈다.
After her husband's death in 1344, she spent four years in extreme austerity at the Cistercian Alvastra Abbey.
그녀는 계시에 따라 1346년에 비르지타회(Bridgettines)를 설립하였다. 또한 그녀는 많은 시간을 로마에서 지내면서 매우 엄격한 생활과 빈민구제에 온 정열을 쏟았으며, 당시의 심각한 교회와 정치사이의 제 문제에 대하여 기탄없는 충고를 하였다.
Following a revelation, she founded the Bridgettines in 1346. In addition, she spent a lot of time in Rome, leading a very strict life and devoting all her energy to alleviating the poor, and gave unvarnished advice on all serious problems between the church and politics of the time.
그녀는 로마 주변의 수도원을 개혁하였고, 그녀의 예언과 고위직책에 대한 탄핵은 유명하였다.
She reformed the monasteries around Rome and was famous for her prophecies and denunciations of high officials.
1373년 7월 23일 그녀는 “주님! 제 영혼을 당신 손에 맡깁니다”하고는 조용히 숨을 거두었다.
On July 23, 1373 she cried out, “Lord! “I entrust my soul into your hands,” he said and quietly breathed his last.
