성 요한 카시아노(Saint John Cassian)의 출생지에 대해서는 여러 전승이 있지만 부유한 그리스도교 가정에서 태어나 훌륭한 교육을 받고 자랐다고 본다.

There are many legends about the birthplace of Saint John Cassian, but it is believed that he was born into a wealthy Christian family and received an excellent education. 

 

그는 라틴어 문화와 그리스어 문화를 익히는 정규 과정을 마치고, 젊은 나이에 친구와 함께 순례를 떠났다.

After completing a formal course in Latin and Greek culture, he went on a pilgrimage with a friend at a young age. 

 

이후 그는 사막에서 에바그리우스 폰티쿠스(Evagrius Ponticus)를 만나 그의 제자이자 동료가 되어 이론적으로 체계적인 수도 생활을 배웠다.

Afterwards, he met Evagrius Ponticus in the desert, became his disciple and colleague, and learned theoretically systematic monastic life. 

 

그는 에우독시아 황후의 사치와 탐욕을 비판하고 부패한 성직자들의 쇄신을 위해 노력하다가 박해를 받는 총대주교의 보호를 교황에게 요청하기 위해 로마로 파견되었고 그곳에서 사제품을 받았다.

He criticized the luxury and greed of the Empress Eudoxia and worked to reform the corrupt clergy. He was sent to Rome to ask the Pope for protection for the persecuted patriarch, and was ordained a priest there. 

 

그런데 그는 여기서 논쟁에 휘말렸는데 원죄로 인해 죄의 지배에 놓인 인간이 구원받기 위해 하느님의 은총이 절대적으로 필요하다는 주장과 인간의 자유 의지만으로도 구원 가능하다는 주장이었다.

However, he was caught up in a controversy here, arguing that God's grace is absolutely necessary for human beings under the control of sin due to original sin to be saved, and that salvation is possible through human free will alone. 

 

오랜 수도 생활을 경험한 그는 인간 구원의 주도권이 하느님께 있는 것은 당연하지만, 인간도 그에 상응하는 노력을 할 책임이 있어야 한다고 보았다.

Having experienced a long period of monastic life, he believed that it was natural for God to take the initiative in human salvation, but that humans should also be responsible for making corresponding efforts. 

 

그는 서방 교회의 수도 생활이 조잡하고 미성숙함을 알게 되었다. 그래서 그는 직접 남녀 수도원을 세우고 프랑스 지역 수도자들에게 이집트 수도승들의 생활과 정신 그리고 영성을 전달하고자 했다.

He found the monastic life of the Western Church to be crude and immature. So, he personally established a monastery for both men and women and attempted to convey the life, spirit, and spirituality of Egyptian monks to monks in France.
