크리스티나(Christina)의 의미는 ‘그리스도교 신자’라는 뜻이다.

The meaning of Christina is ‘Christian believer.’ 

 

볼세나의 성녀 크리스티나(Saint Christina of Bolsena)는 이탈리아의 부유한 귀족 집안에서 태어났다.

Saint Christina of Bolsena was born into a wealthy Italian noble family. 

 

그녀는 어려서부터 그리스도에 대한 굳은 믿음을 갖고 있었으나 아버지는 우상숭배를 좋아하는 이교도였다.

She had a firm faith in Christ from a young age, but her father was a pagan who loved idolatry. 

 

그래서 황금과 은으로 된 많은 우상 조각들을 집안 곳곳에 놓아두고 딸에게도 우상 앞에서 향을 피우도록 강요했다.

So, he placed many pieces of gold and silver idols throughout the house and forced his daughter to burn incense in front of the idols. 

 

어느 날 한 천사가 찾아와 그녀를 ‘그리스도의 신부’라 부르며 앞으로 겪게 될 고통에 대해 말해주었다.

One day, an angel came to her and called her ‘the bride of Christ’ and told her about the suffering she would experience in the future. 

 

천사의 방문으로 힘을 얻은 그녀는 비록 어린 나이에도 불구하고 신앙의 열정에 사로잡혀 금과 은으로 된 우상 조각들을 부숴버리고 가난한 이들에게 나누어주었다.

Strengthened by a visit from an angel, even at a young age she was so passionate about her faith that she broke down pieces of gold and silver idols and distributed them to the poor. 

 

그녀의 행동에 화가 난 아버지는 딸을 지하 감옥에 가두고 하인들을 시켜 채찍질하고, 그 외에도 여러 가지 방법으로 심한 고통을 주었다.

Angry at her behavior, her father locked her in a dungeon and had his servants whip her and subject her to severe pain in various other ways. 

 

아버지는 끝까지 흔들리지 않는 딸을 죽이려고 그녀의 목에 무거운 돌덩어리를 매달아 볼세나 호수에 던져버렸다. 그러나 그녀는 천사의 도움으로 무사히 호수에서 빠져나왔다.

In an attempt to kill his unwavering daughter, the father hung a heavy stone around her neck and threw it into Lake Bolsena. However, Saint Christina escaped from the lake safely with the help of an angel. 

 

그 후 다른 재판관에 인계되어 끌려간 그녀는 계속해서 혹독한 고문을 받으면서도 끝까지 용감하게 참아냈다. 총독은 그녀를 불타는 가마 속에서 5일 동안 있도록 했으나 그녀는 아무런 해도 입지 않았다.

Afterwards, she was taken to another judge and continued to be subjected to severe torture, but bravely endured it until the end. The governor had her stay in a burning furnace for five days, but she suffered no harm. 

 

그리고 큰 뱀들에게 물린 상처도 바로 치유되었다. 마침내 그녀는 잔인하게 혀가 잘리고 목에 화살을 맞아 순교했다.

And the bites from the big snakes healed right away. Finally, she was martyred by cruelly having her tongue cut out and an arrow hitting her neck.
