폴란드의 성녀 쿠네군다(Saint Cunegunda of Poland)는 헝가리 왕의 딸로 태어났다.

Saint Cunegunda of Poland was born as the daughter of the King of Hungary. 

 

그녀는 궁중에서 ‘라틴어와 하느님을 두려워하는 법을 배우면서’ 자랐고, 16세 때 폴란드의 왕과 결혼하였다.

She grew up at court, ‘learning Latin and the fear of God,’ and married the King of Poland at the age of 16. 

 

그녀는 비록 결혼에는 동의하였으나 결혼한 밤에 왕에게 동정을 지키겠다고 말하였다. 아내의 소원을 물리치지 못한 왕은 1년 동안만 지키자고 동의하였다. 그러나 이 기간이 다 끝나기 전에 왕과 왕비는 평생 동정을 지키기로 약속했다.

Although she agreed to the marriage, she told the king on her wedding night that she would remain a virgin. Unable to reject his wife's wishes, the king agreed to keep it for only one year. However, before this period was over, the king and queen promised to remain virgins for the rest of their lives. 

 

그녀는 궁중의상 안에 허름한 옷을 입고 검소하고 엄격한 극기 생활을 실천했다. 수시로 병자와 가난한 이에게 음식을 제공하며 자선사업에 왕실 재산을 기꺼이 사용했다.

She wore shabby clothes under her royal attire and lived a frugal and strictly self-denying life. He frequently provided food to the sick and poor and was willing to use royal property for charity. 

 

1279년에 남편이 사망하자 그녀는 나라를 다스리라는 귀족들의 청을 물리치고 클라라회 봉쇄 수녀원에 들어갔다.

When her husband died in 1279, she rejected the nobles' request to rule the country and entered a cloistered convent of the Order of Clara. 

 

그녀는 수녀원에 들어간 뒤로도 여러 곳에 성당과 병원 등을 지었고, 터키 사람들에게 포로로 잡힌 그리스도인의 몸값을 대신 지불해 그들을 구해주기도 했다.

After entering the convent, she built cathedrals and hospitals in various places, and even paid the ransom for Christians captured by the Turks to save them. 

 

수녀원에서 여생을 지낸 그녀는 1292년 7월 24일 병환으로 선종하였다.

She lived the rest of her life in a convent and died of illness on July 24, 1292.
