성녀 크리스티나(Saint Christina the Astonishing)는 벨기에에서 신심 깊은 가정에서 태어났다.

Saint Christina the Astonishing was born in Belgium to a devout family. 

 

15살에 부모를 잃고 고아가 된 그녀는 21살 때에는 간질병으로 극심한 고통을 동반한 발작을 일으켰다.

She lost her parents at the age of 15 and became an orphan, and at the age of 21, she suffered from epilepsy and suffered extremely painful seizures. 

 

사람들은 그녀의 상태가 너무 심해 이미 죽었다고 생각하고 장례를 준비했다. 그녀를 위한 장례미사가 봉헌되고 있을 때 갑자기 그녀의 몸이 성당 지붕으로 높이 치솟아 올랐다.

Her condition was so severe that people thought she was already dead and prepared a funeral. As the funeral mass was being offered for her, her body suddenly rose high to the roof of the cathedral. 

 

주임 사제가 아래로 내려오라고 명하자 그녀는 그렇게 했다. 그리고 자신이 지옥과 연옥 그리고 천국에도 다녀왔는데, 연옥에서 고통받는 영혼을 위해 기도하러 지상으로 되돌아오게 되었다고 말했다.

When the priest ordered her to come down, she did so. He also said that he had been to hell, purgatory, and heaven, and that he came back to earth to pray for the souls suffering in purgatory. 

 

죽었다가 다시 살아 돌아온 후 그녀는 죄인들의 회개를 위해 극도의 가난과 생활을 실천하며 엄격한 참회와 보속의 삶을 살았다.

After dying and coming back to life, she lived a life of strict penance and penance, practicing extreme poverty for the repentance of sinners. 

 

많은 사람이 그녀를 그저 이상하고 놀라운 사람으로 여겼지만 그녀를 공경하는 이들이 더 많았고 전통적으로 그녀에게 정신적 병으로 고통받는 이들과 그들을 위해 일하는 이들을 위한 전구 기도를 청해왔다.

Although many people thought she was just a strange and wonderful person, there were many more who revered her and traditionally asked her to intercede for those suffering from mental illness and those who worked for them.
