성녀 올림피아(Saint Olympias)는 로마제국의 콘스탄티노플에서 귀족 가문의 딸로 태어났다.

Saint Olympias was born in Constantinople, Roman Empire, as the daughter of a noble family. 

 

어린 나이에 부모를 잃고 삼촌의 보호에서 훌륭한 교육을 받으며 학문적 교양과 확고한 그리스도교 신앙을 지닌 처녀로 성장했다.

She lost her parents at a young age, received a good education under her uncle's care, and grew up as a young woman with academic sophistication and a firm Christian faith. 

 

그녀는 18세 때에 결혼했으나 2년도 안 되어 과부가 되고 말았다. 그녀는 재산도 많고 용모도 뛰어났기 때문에 황제를 비롯해 재혼을 권하는 사람이 많았지만, 모든 유혹과 강압에도 불구하고 금욕적인 삶을 살기도 결심했다.

She married when she was 18, but became a widow less than two years later. Because she had a lot of wealth and an outstanding appearance, many people, including the emperor, encouraged her to remarry, but despite all the temptations and pressures, she decided to live a celibate life. 

 

한동안 황제의 명으로 원치 않는 후견인의 통제를 받았지만 결국은 하느님께 자신을 봉헌하고자 하는 그녀의 의지를 꺾을 수는 없었다.

For a time, she was controlled by an unwanted guardian at the behest of the emperor, but in the end her will to offer herself to God could not be broken. 

 

자신의 재산에 대한 권리를 되찾은 그녀는 본격적으로 자선활동을 시작했다.

After regaining her rights to her property, she began her charity work in earnest. 

 

그녀는 막대한 재산을 이용해 가난한 사람을 돕고, 노예들의 몸값을 기부하고, 순례자와 성직자들을 위한 숙소를 짓고, 병자들을 위한 병원과 신학교 등을 세웠다.

She used her vast fortune to help the poor, ransom slaves, build lodgings for pilgrims and clergy, and establish hospitals and seminaries for the sick. 

 

그러면서도 본인을 위해서는 철저한 금욕과 가난을 실천하며 기도 생활에 전념했다. 콘스탄티노플의 총대주교는 그녀의 나이가 규정보다 많이 어렸음에도 불구하고 그녀를 부제(Deacon) 직분에 올렸다.

However, for his own sake, he practiced thorough abstinence and poverty and devoted himself to a life of prayer. The Patriarch of Constantinople elevated her to the office of Deacon even though she was much younger than required. 

 

그녀는 다른 여성 부제들(Deacons)과 함께 자선활동과 이교도 여성들의 세례 준비를 돕는데 헌신하였다.

Together with other female deacons, she devoted herself to charity and helping pagan women prepare for baptism. 

 

자신의 영적 아버지가 되어 준 성 요한 크리소스토모(Saint John Chrysostom)를 지지하다가 반대파의 표적이 되어 모든 것을 빼앗긴 채 유배를 당했다.

While supporting Saint John Chrysostom, who became his spiritual father, he became a target of opposition and was deprived of everything and sent into exile. 

 

그리고 유배지에서 408년 7월 25일 선종했다. 그리고 성 요한 크리소스토모(Saint John Chrysostom)는 그녀를 이렇게 표현했다.

He died in exile on July 25, 408. And Saint John Chrysostom described her this way: 

 

“당신은 그 어떤 겨울 폭풍보다 더 강력한 지식을 가지고 있으며, 수천 명의 군인보다 더 강한 철학자의 영혼의 힘을 지니고 있습니다. 그리고 무기보다 강력하고 또한 탑과 성벽만큼이나 안전합니다.”

“You possess knowledge more powerful than any winter storm, and the strength of a philosopher's soul stronger than that of a thousand soldiers. And it is stronger than weapons and as safe as towers and walls.”
