성녀 안나(Saint Anne)는 베들레헴에서 태어났다. 그러나 그녀에게 흠이라고는 결혼한 지 오래되었으나 아이가 없다는 것이었다.

Saint Anne was born in Bethlehem. But her fault was that although she had been married for a long time, she had no children. 

 

이스라엘에서 자녀가 없다는 것은 하느님의 축복을 받지 못하는 상태로 여겨졌다.

In Israel, being childless was considered a condition of not receiving God's blessing. 

 

일행들과 함께 예루살렘 성전에 갔을 때 준비해 온 제물을 봉헌하려 했지만, 대사제로부터 자녀가 없다는 이유로 제단 앞에 나설 자격이 없다는 핀잔을 받고 쫓겨나기도 했었다.

When he went to the temple in Jerusalem with his companions, he tried to offer the sacrifice he had prepared, but was kicked out after being scolded by the high priest for not having children and saying he was not qualified to appear in front of the altar. 

 

그래서 남편은 자녀 문제로 단식하며 하느님께 간절히 기도할 결심으로 광야에 갔다. 그동안 집에 홀로 남겨진 그녀 역시 주님 앞에서 울며 탄식의 기도를 바쳤다.

So the husband went into the wilderness with the decision to fast and pray earnestly to God for his children. Meanwhile, left alone at home, she also cried and prayed a prayer of lament before the Lord. 

 

이 부부의 간절한 기도는 곧바로 응답을 받았다. 한 천사가 그녀에게 나타나 그가 잉태하여 낳을 아이는 온 세상에 그 이름을 떨칠 것이라고 예고해 주었다. 이에 그녀는 그 아이를 주님께 봉헌하겠다고 약속했다.

The couple's earnest prayers were answered immediately. An angel appeared to her and predicted that the child she would conceive and give birth to would be renowned throughout the world. So she promised to dedicate the child to the Lord. 

 

광야에서 기도하던 중 이와 비슷한 환시를 본 남편 역시 기뻐하며 집으로 돌아왔다. 그녀는 남편이 돌아온다는 전갈을 받고 성문 앞으로 마중 나가서 기쁨의 포옹을 했다.

The husband, who had seen a similar vision while praying in the wilderness, returned home happy. When she received word that her husband was returning, she went to meet him at the gate and hugged him with joy. 

 

그 후 그녀는 딸을 낳았고 그녀는 아기에게 마리아라는 이름을 지어 주었다.

Afterwards she gave birth to a daughter and she named the baby Maria. 

 

아이가 세 살이 되었을 때, 그녀는 하느님께 약속한 대로 마리아를 예루살렘 성전으로 데려가 그곳에서 양육 받도록 맡겼다고 한다.

When the child was three years old, she took Mary to the temple in Jerusalem and left her there to be raised, as she had promised God.
