성 베드로 포베다 카스트로베르데(Saint Pedro Poveda Castroverde)는 1874년 12월 3일 에스파냐에서 독신한 그리스도인 가정에서 태어났다.

Saint Pedro Poveda Castroverde was born in Spain on December 3, 1874 into a single Christian family. 

 

어려서부터 사제직에 대한 성소를 느낀 그는 신학교에 입학하였고 1897년 4월 17일에 사제품을 받았다. 사제가 된 후 그는 신학교에서 학생들을 가르치며 다른 여러 방면에서 교구의 직무를 맡아 봉사하였다.

Feeling a vocation to the priesthood from a young age, he entered the seminary and was ordained a priest on April 17, 1897. After becoming a priest, he taught students at a seminary and served in many other diocesan capacities. 

 

신앙과 과학의 대립은 그 시대의 문화 안에서 더욱더 분명해지자 그는 교사들을 그리스도교적으로 양성해야 할 필요성을 더 잘 이해하게 되었다.

As the conflict between faith and science became more and more evident in the culture of his time, he came to better understand the need for the Christian formation of teachers. 

 

그는 그리스도인의 생활과 평신도들을 위해 그들과 함께 만들어가는 복음화의 새로운 길로써 테레시안 연합회(Teresian Association)를 제시했고, 자신의 체험에 근거해서 그들이 복음의 증거자가 되도록 양성해갔다.

He proposed the Teresian Association as a new path of evangelization for the Christian life and laity, and based on his own experience, trained them to become witnesses of the gospel. 

 

1936년 발발한 에스파냐의 내전으로 인해 종교에 대한 박해가 일어났고, 마드리드에 있던 그 역시 순교의 위험에 놓였을 때 그는 기꺼이 순교할 것을 다짐했다.

The Spanish civil war that broke out in 1936 led to persecution of religion, and when he, in Madrid, was also at risk of martyrdom, he pledged to be willing to do so. 

 

1936년 7월 28일 새벽, 박해자들이 그의 신원을 확인하기 위해 물었을 때 그는 당당히 대답했다. “나는 그리스도의 사제이다.” 그는 결국 신앙을 지키기 위해 순교자로서 총에 맞아 순교하였다.

In the early morning of July 28, 1936, when his persecutors asked him to confirm his identity, he confidently answered. “I am a priest of Christ.” In the end, he was shot and killed as a martyr to protect his faith.
