트루아의 성 루포(Saint Lupus of Troyes)는 프랑스에서 상류 가정의 아들로 태어났다. 어려서 세례를 받고 훌륭한 교육을 받으며 성장한 그는 젊어서 변호사가 되었다.

Saint Lupus of Troyes was born in France into an upper-class family. He was baptized at a young age, received a good education, and became a lawyer at a young age. 

 

그는 결혼하여 7년을 생활했으나 하느님을 섬기려는 열망을 이길 길이 없어서 서로 합의하고 헤어졌다.

He was married for seven years, but could not overcome his desire to serve God, so they agreed and separated. 

 

그는 재산을 팔아 가난한 사람들에게 나누어 준 뒤 수도원으로 들어갔다. 그는 426년에 트루아의 주교로 임명되었는데, 주교직을 수행하면서도 겸손 · 고행 · 청빈 등 수도자의 기본적 자세를 조금도 흐트러트리지 않아 큰 존경을 받았다.

He sold his property, gave it to the poor, and entered a monastery. He was appointed bishop of Troyes in 426, and while performing his duties as bishop, he was greatly respected because he did not disturb the basic attitudes of a monk, such as humility, asceticism, and poverty. 

 

그는 극히 검소한 의복을 입고 나무판자 위에서 잠을 잤으며, 개인 기도를 바치는 시간이 많았고, 거의 매일 단식을 실천했다고 한다.

It is said that he wore extremely frugal clothing, slept on a wooden plank, spent a lot of time in private prayer, and fasted almost every day. 

 

두 주교는 기도와 설교 그리고 기적을 통해 펠라기우스 이단의 오류를 바로잡고자 노력한 후 다음 해 부활절 직후 갈리아 지방으로 돌아왔다.

After trying to correct the errors of the Pelagian heresy through prayer, sermons, and miracles, the two bishops returned to Gaul immediately after Easter the following year. 

 

이러한 공로 때문에 그는 다음과 같이 칭송받았다. “사제 중의 사제요, 주교 중의 주교요, 프랑스 지방의 최고 성직자이며, 윤리의 기준이고, 진리의 기둥이며, 하느님의 친구이고, 인간에 대한 하느님의 대리자이다.”

For these merits he was praised as follows: “A priest among priests, a bishop among bishops, the highest clergy of the French provinces, a standard of ethics, a pillar of truth, a friend of God, and a representative of God to man.” 

 

451년 그는 훈족(Huns)의 아틸라(Attila)로부터 트루아를 기적적으로 보호한 것으로 여겨지고, 마귀 들린 소녀와 중풍 병자 등을 치유하는 여러 기적을 행한 것으로도 알려졌다.

He is believed to have miraculously protected Troyes from Attila of the Huns in 451, and is also known to have performed several miracles, including healing a demon-possessed girl and a paralyzed man. 

 

만년에 그는 은수자로 생활하다가 주교로 돌아와 선종하였다.

In his later years, he lived as a hermit, returned as a bishop, and died.
