베타니아의 성녀 마리아(Saint Mary of Bethany)는 주님을 환대한 성녀 마르타(Saint Martha)와 죽었다가 다시 살아난 성 라자로(Lazarus)의 누이동생으로 예루살렘 인근 베타니아에 살았고, 주님께 향유를 붓고 자기 머리카락으로 그분의 발을 닦아 드린 적이 있었다.
Saint Mary of Bethany is the sister of Saint Martha, who welcomed the Lord, and Saint Lazarus, who died and came back to life. She lived in Bethany, near Jerusalem, and anointed the Lord with perfume and hair from her hair. I once washed his feet.
갖가지 시중드는 일로 분주하던 그녀가 “주님, 제 동생이 저 혼자 시중들게 내버려 두는데도 보고만 계십니까? 저를 도우라고 동생에게 일러 주십시오.”하고 말했을 때, 주님께서는 “마르타야, 마르타야! 너는 많은 일을 염려하고 걱정하는구나. 그러나 필요한 것은 한 가지뿐이다. 마리아는 좋은 몫을 선택하였다. 그리고 그것을 빼앗기지 않을 것이다”라고 말씀하셨다.

그래서 성녀 마르타(Saint Martha)는 보통 활동적이고 봉사하는 그리스도인의 상징으로, 성녀 마리아(Saint Mary)는 기도하며 관상 생활을 추구하는 이들의 모범으로 인식되었다.

성 라자로(Saint Lazarus)가 병을 앓고 있을 때 성녀 마르타(Saint Martha)와 성녀 마리아(Saint Mary)는 예수님께 사람을 보내어 도움을 청했다.
When Saint Lazarus was sick, Saint Martha and Saint Mary sent someone to Jesus to ask for help.
예수님께서는 바로 가지 않으시고 며칠 뒤에 베타니아로 가셨다. 그녀는 예수님께서 오신다는 말씀을 듣고 그분을 맞으러 나갔고, 성녀 마리아(Saint Mary)는 그냥 집에 있었다.
Jesus did not go right away, but went to Bethany a few days later. When she heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Saint Mary stayed home.
성녀 마리아(Saint Mary)는 스승님께서 부르신다는 언니의 말을 듣고 예수님께 가서 “주님, 주님께서 여기에 계셨더라면 제 오빠가 죽지 않았을 것입니다.”라며 울었고, 예수님께서도 눈물을 흘리셨다.
When Saint Mary heard from her sister that the Master was calling her, she went to Jesus and cried, saying, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jesus also shed tears.
예수님께서 파스카 축제 엿새 전에 베타니아에 가셨을 때 예수님을 위한 잔치가 베풀어졌는데, 성녀 마르타(Saint Martha)는 시중을 들고 성 라자로(Saint Lazarus)는 예수님과 더불어 식탁에 앉아 있었다.
When Jesus went to Bethany six days before the Paschal festival, a feast was held for him, with Saint Martha serving and Saint Lazarus sitting at the table with Jesus.
그때 성녀 마리아(Saint Mary)는 비싼 순 나르드 향유 한 리트라를 가져와 예수님의 발에 붓고 자기 머리카락으로 그 발을 닦아 드렸다. “어찌하여 저 향유를 삼백 데나리온에 팔아 가난한 이들에게 나누어 주지 않는가?”라는 유다 이스카리옷의 말에 예수님께서는 당신 장례 날을 위한 일이라며 마리아를 두둔해주셨다.
At that time, Saint Mary took a bottle of expensive pure nard perfume, poured it on Jesus' feet, and wiped his feet with her hair. When Judas Iscariot asked, “Why don’t you sell the ointment for three hundred denarii and give it to the poor?” Jesus supported Mary, saying that it was for the day of His funeral.
