베타니아의 성녀 마르타(Saint Martha of Bethany)는 성녀 마리아(Saint Mary)와 죽었다가 다시 살아난 성 라자로(Saint Lazarus)의 누이로 주로 집안일을 담당했던 것 같다.
Saint Martha of Bethany is the sister of Saint Mary and Saint Lazarus, who died and came back to life, and seems to have been mainly in charge of household chores.
갖가지 시중드는 일로 분주하던 그녀가 “주님, 제 동생이 저 혼자 시중들게 내버려 두는데도 보고만 계십니까? 저를 도우라고 동생에게 일러 주십시오.”하고 말했을 때, 주님께서는 “마르타야, 마르타야! 너는 많은 일을 염려하고 걱정하는구나. 그러나 필요한 것은 한 가지뿐이다. 마리아는 좋은 몫을 선택하였다. 그리고 그것을 빼앗기지 않을 것이다”라고 말씀하셨다.
She, who was busy with all sorts of things, said, “Lord, are you just watching my younger brother leave me to wait on him alone? When she said, “Tell my sister to help me,” the Lord said, “Martha, Martha! You are worried and worried about many things. But only one thing is needed. Mary chose the good portion. And it will not be taken away from you.”
그래서 그녀는 보통 활동적이고 봉사하는 그리스도인의 상징으로, 성녀 마리아(Saint Mary)는 기도하며 관상 생활을 추구하는 이들의 모범으로 인식되었다.
Therefore, she was usually recognized as a symbol of an active and serving Christian, and Saint Mary was recognized as an example for those who pray and pursue a contemplative life.
성 라자로(Saint Lazarus)가 병을 앓고 있을 때 성녀 마르타(Saint Martha)와 성녀 마리아(Saint Mary)는 예수님께 사람을 보내어 도움을 청했다.
When Saint Lazarus was sick, Saint Martha and Saint Mary sent someone to Jesus to ask for help.
예수님께서는 바로 가지 않으시고 며칠 뒤에 베타니아로 가셨다. 그녀는 예수님께서 오신다는 말씀을 듣고 그분을 맞으러 나갔고, 성녀 마리아(Saint Mary)는 그냥 집에 있었다.
Jesus did not go right away, but went to Bethany a few days later. When she heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Saint Mary stayed home.
그녀는 예수님을 만나자마자 “주님, 주님께서 여기에 계셨더라면 제 오빠가 죽지 않았을 것입니다. 그러나 하느님께서는 주님께서 청하시는 것은 무엇이나 들어주신다는 것을 저는 지금도 알고 있습니다.”라고 원망과 함께 신앙 고백을 하고 있다.
As soon as she met Jesus, she said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. “But I still know that God grants us whatever we ask for,” he said, confessing his faith along with his resentment.
이어지는 예수님과의 대화에서도 그녀는 예수님의 뜻을 온전히 깨닫지는 못했지만, “저는 주님께서 이 세상에 오시기로 되어 있는 메시아시며 하느님의 아드님이심을 믿습니다.”라며 완전한 신앙 고백을 하고 있다.
In the following conversation with Jesus, she did not fully understand Jesus' will, but she made a complete confession of faith, saying, "I believe that the Lord is the Messiah and the Son of God who was to come to this world."
이처럼 그녀는 예수님의 사랑을 받으며 가까이에서 주님을 섬기는 봉사를 통해 차츰 완전한 신앙 고백으로 나아간 참된 제자의 모범이었다.
In this way, she was an example of a true disciple who was loved by Jesus and gradually advanced to a full confession of faith through close service to the Lord.
