성 요아킴(Saint Joachim)은 부유하고 이스라엘에서 존경받는 인물이었다. 그러나 그에게 흠이라고는 결혼한지 오래되었으나 아이가 없다는 것이었다.

Saint Joachim was a wealthy and respected figure in Israel. However, his only flaw was that although he had been married for a long time, he had no children. 

 

이스라엘에서 자녀가 없다는 것은 하느님의 축복을 받지 못하는 상태로 여겨지기 때문에, 그는 늘 시무룩해 있었다.

In Israel, being childless was considered a condition of not receiving God's blessing, so he was always sullen. 

 

게다가 일행들과 함께 예루살렘 성전에 갔을 때 준비해 온 제물을 봉헌하려 했지만, 대사제로부터 자녀가 없다는 이유로 제단 앞에 나설 자격이 없다는 핀잔을 받고 쫓겨나기도 했었다.

In addition, when he went to the temple in Jerusalem with his companions, he tried to offer up the sacrifice he had prepared, but was kicked out after being scolded by the high priest for not being fit to appear in front of the altar because he had no children. 

 

그래서 그는 자녀 문제로 단식하며 하느님께 간절히 기도할 결심으로 광야에 갔다. 그동안 집에 홀로 남겨진 그의 아내 역시 주님 앞에서 울며 탄식의 기도를 바쳤다.

So he went into the wilderness with the decision to fast and pray earnestly to God for his children. Meanwhile, his wife, who was left alone at home, also cried and prayed in lament before the Lord.

 

광야에서 기도하던 중 환시를 본 그는 기뻐하며 집으로 돌아왔다. 그 후 그는 딸을 낳았고 아기에게 마리아라는 이름을 지어 주었다.

While praying in the wilderness, he had a vision and returned home happy. Afterwards, he gave birth to a daughter and named her Maria. 

 

아이가 세 살이 되었을 때, 부부는 하느님께 약속한 대로 마리아를 예루살렘 성전으로 데려가 그곳에서 양육 받도록 맡겼다고 한다.

When the child was three years old, the couple took Mary to the temple in Jerusalem and left her there to be raised, as they had promised to God.
