크리스토포로(Christopher)의 의미는 ‘그리스도를 어깨에 업고 간다.’라는 뜻이다.

The meaning of Christopher is ‘carrying Christ on one’s shoulders.’ 

 

성 크리스토포로(Saint Christopher)의 생애나 죽음에 대해 확실히 알려진 것은 거의 없다.

Little is known for sure about the life or death of Saint Christopher. 

 

그에 관한 전설적인 이야기들에 따르면, 그는 가나안 또는 아랍의 왕비가 성모 마리아께 기도해 얻은 아들이라고 한다.

According to legendary stories about him, he was the son of a Canaanite or Arab queen who prayed to the Virgin Mary. 

 

기골이 장대하고 힘센 청년으로 성장한 그는 세상에서 가장 힘이 세고 용감한 사람을 주인으로 섬기겠다고 결심했다.

As he grew into a strong-willed and powerful young man, he decided to serve as his master the strongest and bravest man in the world. 

 

그래서 처음에는 왕과 악마에게 의탁했는데, 왕은 악마를 보기만 해도 겁을 내고, 악마는 길거리에 있는 십자가를 두려워했다. 그러던 중 한 은수자를 만나 그리스도에게 충성하라는 권고를 듣고 세례를 받았다.

So at first, they relied on the king and the devil, but the king was scared at the sight of the devil, and the devil was scared of the cross on the street. Then, he met a hermit who advised him to be faithful to Christ and was baptized. 

 

하느님의 자녀가 된 그는 신체적 장점을 살려 사람들이 물살이 사나운 강을 무사히 건널 수 있도록 도와주는 일을 하며 생계를 이어갔다.

As a child of God, he made a living by using his physical strengths to help people safely cross turbulent rivers. 

 

그러면서도 언젠가 자기보다 더 힘센 사람이 나타나면 그를 주인으로 알고 섬기겠다고 생각하고 있었다. 다만 악마도 십자가를 겁내기 때문에 그리스도만이 최고로 힘센 장사라고 추측할 뿐이었다.

At the same time, he thought that one day, if someone stronger than him appeared, he would consider him as his master and serve him. However, since even the devil is afraid of the cross, he only assumed that Christ was the most powerful warrior. 

 

그러던 어느 날 한 아이를 어깨에 메고 강을 건너는데 그 아이의 무게가 점점 무거워지더니 결국 온 세상을 어깨에 짊어진 것만 같아 강을 건널 수가 없었다.

Then one day, as I was crossing the river carrying a child on my shoulders, the weight of the child became heavier and heavier, and I felt as if I was carrying the whole world on my shoulders, so I could not cross the river. 

 

“이상한 일인데” 하며 혼자 중얼거리는데 그 아이가 이렇게 말하였다. “너는 지금 전 세계를 옮기고 있다. 나는 네가 찾던 세상의 창조주이며 구세주인 예수 그리스도이다.”

“This is strange,” he muttered to himself, and the child said this. “You are moving around the world now. “I am Jesus Christ, the creator and savior of the world you have been seeking.” 

 

그리고 그 증거로 그에게 강을 건널 때 사용하던 막대기를 땅에 꽂아 보라고 했다. 다음날 그 막대기는 커다란 종려나무로 자랐고 많은 열매가 달려 있었다.

And as proof, he asked him to stick the stick he used to cross the river into the ground. The next day the stick grew into a large palm tree with many fruits. 

 

이 기적으로 많은 사람이 회개하자 리키아의 왕은 그에게 온갖 고문을 가한 후 참수했다고 한다. 그런데 그를 참수할 때 튄 피 한 방울로 자신의 병이 낫자 왕 역시 그리스도교로 개종했다고 한다.

It is said that when many people repented due to this miracle, the king of Lycia subjected him to various tortures and then beheaded him. However, it is said that the king also converted to Christianity when his illness was cured by a drop of blood that spattered when he was beheaded.
