안티오키아의 성녀 마르가리타(Saint Margaret of Antioch)는 귀족 출신의 이교도 사제인 아버지의 딸로 태어났으나 어머니가 일찍 사망했기 때문에 어려서부터 유모의 보살핌을 받으며 자랐다.

Saint Margaret of Antioch was born as the daughter of an aristocratic pagan priest father, but because her mother died at an early age, she was raised under the care of a nanny from an early age. 

 

독실한 그리스도인이었던 유모의 영향으로 그녀는 자라면서 그리스도교로 개종해 은밀히 신앙생활을 이어갔고, 개인적으로 동정을 서원하며 일생을 하느님께 바칠 결심을 했다.

Under the influence of her nanny, who was a devout Christian, she converted to Christianity as she grew up and continued her religious life in secret. She personally took a vow of virginity and decided to dedicate her life to God. 

 

그러던 중 아버지의 의심을 사서 추궁을 받자 당당히 그리스도인임을 고백했고, 결국 집에서 쫓겨나고 말았다.

Then, when his father aroused his suspicions and was interrogated, he confidently confessed that he was a Christian and was eventually kicked out of the house. 

 

그녀는 곧 유모와 함께 집을 나와서 귀족 신분에도 불구하고 양을 치고 살며 오히려 자유롭고 평화로운 신앙생활을 누릴 수 있었다.

She soon left home with her nanny and, despite her noble status, was able to live a free and peaceful life of faith while tending sheep. 

 

그러던 중 그 지방에 새로 부임한 지방 장관이 우연히 그녀를 보고는 그녀의 뛰어난 용모와 높은 지식에 반해 자기 아내를 버리고 그녀와 결혼하려고 했다.

Meanwhile, a newly appointed local minister happened to see her and was so impressed by her outstanding appearance and high knowledge that he abandoned his wife and tried to marry her. 

 

그녀는 온갖 감언이설로 유혹하는 지방 장관의 요구에 조금도 흔들리지 않았고 오히려 단호히 거절했다.

She was not swayed in the slightest by the demands of the local minister, who tempted her with all kinds of coaxing, but instead flatly refused. 

 

그녀가 그리스도인임을 안 지방 장관은 박해를 빌미로 협박과 회유를 했지만, 그때마다 그녀는 슬기롭게 답변했을 뿐만 아니라 용감하게 자신의 신앙을 고백했다.

Knowing that she was a Christian, the local minister used the excuse of persecution to threaten and cajole her, but each time she not only responded wisely but also courageously confessed her faith. 

 

결국 그리스도인이란 죄목으로 투옥된 그녀는 지하 감옥에 갇혀 갖은 고문을 당했다. 그 후로도 그녀는 많은 고문을 당했지만, 하느님의 도우심으로 몸에 상처 하나 입지 않고 이겨냈다.

In the end, she was imprisoned on the charge of being a Christian and was imprisoned in a dungeon and subjected to various tortures. After that, she suffered a lot of torture, but with God's help, she got through it without a single wound on her body. 

 

그러면서 그녀의 용감한 신앙을 지켜보던 군중들은 그리스도인이 될 각오를 마음에서부터 다질 수 있었다고 한다. 결국 그녀는 참수형을 받고 순교했지만, 그녀의 죽음은 그 지방의 수많은 사람이 그리스도교로 개종하는 놀라운 결과를 낳았다.

It is said that the crowd who watched her courageous faith were able to strengthen their resolve to become Christians. In the end, she was beheaded and martyred, but her death had the surprising result of many people in the area converting to Christianity.
