스페인에서 태어난 성 라우렌시오는 교황 성 식스투스 2세(Sixtus II)를 돕는 로마의 일곱
부제 중 수석으로, 주된 임무는 교회 재산 관리와 빈민 구호 및 일반적인 교회 관리였다.
Saint Lawrence, born in Spain, was the chief of the seven deacons of Rome
who assisted Pope Saint Sixtus II, whose principal duties were the administration of church property, the relief of the poor, and the general administration of
the church.
교황 성 식스투스 2세가 카타콤바에서 미사를 봉헌하던 중 체포되어 순교의 길을 걷자
성 라우렌시오는 슬픔을 억누르지 못해 울면서 그 뒤를 따라가며 “아버지시여, 보잘것없는
저를 버리고 어디로 가십니까? 당신은 미사 때에 저에게 복사를 요청하셨습니다. 어디가 맞지
않으셔서 저를 버리고 가십니까?” 하며 울부짖었다.
When Pope Saint Sixtus II was arrested while celebrating mass in the catacombs
and walked the path of martyrdom, Saint Lawrence followed him weeping, unable
to contain his sorrow, crying out, “Father, where are you going to leave me who is
insignificant? You asked me for a Altar server at Mass. Are you leaving me because
you don't fit in?” cried out.
교황은 이 말을 듣고 성인을 위로하며 “내가 너를 버리는 것이 아니다. 너는 남아서 더욱 힘든
투쟁을 해서 승리를 얻을 것이다. 나야 늙었으니 간단한 전쟁으로 끝날 것이지만,
너는 젊으니 더욱 빛나는 승리를 얻어야 한다. 3일 후에 너도 나를 따라올 것이다.” 라고
말하였다.
Hearing this, the pope comforted the saint and said, “I am not abandoning you.
You will remain and fight harder and gain victory. Since I am old, it will end in a simple war, but since you are young, you must win a more brilliant victory.
In three days you will follow me too.” he said.
그러자 성 라우렌시오는 기쁨을 감추지 못한 채 돌아와 교회의 재산을 팔아 가난한 사람들에게 나누어주기 시작했다.
Then Saint Lawrence returned with joy and began to sell the property of the church and give it to the poor.
로마의 집정관이 그의 이런 행위를 알고 교회의 모든 보물을 즉시 황제에게 바치라고
엄명을 내렸다.
When the Roman consul learned of this act, he ordered that all the treasures of the church be immediately dedicated to the emperor.
이 말을 들은 성 라우렌시오는 교회의 재산을 모두 모아 정리하려면 3일의 여유가
필요하다며 시간을 청한 후, 교회의 값비싼 그릇들과 돈을 모두 가난한 이들에게 나누어주었다.
Hearing this, Saint Lawrence asked for time, saying that he needed three days to
collect all the church's property, and then distributed all of the church's expensive
utensils and money to the poor.
그리고 재산을 요구하는 집정관에게 병자와 고아와 과부 그리고 가난한 이들을 모두 데리고
나타나 “이 사람들이 교회의 재산입니다.”라고 말했다.
Then he brought the sick, the orphans, the widows, and the poor to the consul
asking for property, and said, “These are the property of the church.”
이에 분노한 집정관은 그를 체포해 온갖 고문으로 괴롭히다가 석쇠 위에 눕히고는
구워 죽이는 형벌에 처할 것을 명했다.
Enraged by this, the consul arrested him, tortured him with all sorts of tortures,
and ordered that he be laid on a grill and roasted to death.
성 라우렌시오는 이러한 형벌을 받는 중에도 눈 하나 깜짝하지 않았으며, 오히려 형리들에게
“자! 한쪽은 다 익었으니 좀 뒤집어 주시오.” 하였고, 잠시 후에는 법관을 향해
“이제 다 익었으니 잡수시오.” 하고 농담을 하며 숨을 거두었다.
Saint Lawrence did not blink an eye while undergoing this punishment, but instead said to the sentencers, “Come on! One side is cooked, so turn it over.” After a while, he turned to the judge and said, "Now that it's all cooked, eat it." he joked and died.
그리고 순교 때나 그 후에도 그의 몸에서는 향기가 났다고 한다.
And it is said that at the time of his martyrdom and even after that, his body smelled fragrant.
